LICOS - Centre for Institutions and Economic Performance at the Faculty of
Business and Economics, Katholieke Universiteit Leuven, is seeking to appoint a
PhD student/Research Assistant for 4 years as of Fall 2009, to support current
research on Food Policy, Development and related fields. Field work in any of
the geographic regions of focus (Eastern Europe, China, India, Africa) is
possible. The supervisor of the project is Prof. J. Swinnen, Director of LICOS.

Selection Criteria
· University degree in economics or applied economics, preferably at
MPhil level
· Strong analytic and technical capabilities in modern economic methods
· Proficiency in statistical and econometric methods
· Interest in developing collaborative research within the research
project
· A GRE test will be required for admission
· Fluency in spoken and written English (a TOEFL or IELTS test will be
required for non-native speakers)
About LICOS
LICOS is a research centre of Excellence at the Faculty of Business and
Economics that focuses on theoretical and empirical research of macro- and
micro-economic aspects of transition, institutional changes and economic
performance. LICOS belongs to the 12 “Centres of Excellence” of K.U. Leuven. The
research at LICOS is organized around four main research themes, each under the
auspices of a Research Director:

PhD Program at the Faculty
The research project will allow the student to simultaneously pursue a PhD in
(Applied) Economics. The University of Leuven (KUL) has an extensive Ph.D.
program: about 160 researchers are currently pursuing a Ph.D. in Applied
Economics/Business studies or PhD in Economics. Usually, a PhD program takes 4
years, with the first year including important course work in advanced
economics.

Please find below the currently open vacancies at the Centre for Geoinformatics (Z_GIS), Salzburg University – Austria. Geospatial indicators for disaster risk management (PhD position).
The announced PhD position (30 hours/week) is available from March 2009 (as soon as possible) for 2.5 years, with an option for further extension and contract renewal in October 2011.

Responsibilities
Under the overall guidance of the research coordinator at Z_GIS, and the direct supervision of the project coordinator, the successful applicant will function as a project collaborator (researcher) and will perform the following functions:
· contributes to the preparation and provision of project deliverables;
· participates in workshops and meetings;
· tracks schedules of tasks;
· develops an own research plan for the PhD thesis, in line with envisaged achievements of project- or organizational objectives.
Earth observation for energy studies (Post-Doc position)
The announced PostDoc position (40 hours / week) is available from May
2009 for 3 years, with an option for further extension and contract renewal in June 2012.

Fulbright-Japan Scholarship Program 2009

The Asian Development Bank (ADB) - Japan Scholarship Program (JSP) was established in April 1988 with financing from the Government of Japan. It aims to provide an opportunity for well-qualified citizens of ADB’s developing member countries to pursue postgraduate studies in economics, management, science and technology, and other development-related fields at participating academic institutions in the Asian and Pacific Region. The ADB-JSP enrolls about 300 students annually in 20 academic institutions located in 10 countries within the Region.
School of International Health, University of Tokyo is one of institutions participating in this ADB-JSP scholarship program.
Programs offered: Master/Doctorate in Public Health (International Health)

Scholarship Description
The ADB-JSP provides full scholarships for one to two years.
* full tuition fees
* a monthly subsistence and housing allowance
* an allowance for books and instructional materials
* medical insurance
* travel expenses
The scholarship is for one year with an extension to the second year of study, as appropriate, which shall be conditional on the scholar maintaining a satisfactory level of performance as determined by the institute. The maximum duration of scholarship award is two years for masters and doctorate programs.

Eligibility Requirements
* A national of an ADB borrowing member country (applicants from countries that are no longer borrowing from ADB are not eligible for the ADB-JSP Scholarship).
* Gained admission to an approved post graduate course in any of the participating academic institutions. (School of International Health, University of Tokyo)
* A bachelor’s degree or its equivalent with superior academic record.
* At least two (2) years of full-time professional working experience
* Proficiency in oral and written English communication skills to be able to pursue studies.
* Not more than 35 years old at the time of application.
* In good health.
* Should agree to return to his/her home county after completion of studies under the Program.
* Staff of participating academic institutions are not eligible for the Scholarship.
* Executive Directors, Alternate Directors, management and staff of ADB, consultants, and relatives of the aforementioned are not eligible for the Scholarship.
* Executive Directors, Alternate Directors, management and staff of the other international organizations are not eligible for the Scholarship.
* Applicants living or working in a country other than his/her home country are not eligible for the Scholarship.
Upon completion of their study programs, scholars are expected to contribute to the economic and social development of their home countries.
